PetHub ScruffTag Collar Giveaway!
Includes 1 Year Membership :)

Check it Out!
Oliver's New ScruffTag Collar by PetHub

© Boyko
Did you see Oliver's new ScruffTag Collar in yesterday's PetHub review? It's a bright, beautiful orange, but his fluffy mane is so thick that you can hardly see it. I got a little help with these photos so I could show off the collar under his thick neck fur.

I'm so pleased to finally have a collar that doesn't have metal dangling from it. As cute as some are on a short-coated dog, you can hardly see most of them on Oliver. Worse still was the staining that he always had in the area of the tags. We're glad to be done with the neck stains and able to always have a beautiful white coat.

Shall we give away some ScruffTag Collars for some of your dogs? My new friends at PetHub are offering 5 ScruffTag Collars and throwing in a Silver Level membership so you get a shelter alert sent out whenever you flag your pup as lost, the automatic email notification when your lost pup is scanned, and a GPS map to tell you where he is. Cool, huh?

Prefer to just order your own and be done with it? No problem. Check out PetHub.com and their Get Tagged page at this link to select your tag and order. If you have questions, stop by Facebook or Twitter and get some answers.

Winners will be able to select their color and size to make certain that Fido has the perfect look for his coat color! And one last thing; Fido's name can be added to his tag. Have fun with this one; it's a $66 value! Entries will be accepted through midnight on Thursday, January 19. Winners will be announced late on Friday, January 20.

PetHub QR Tags & Collars
Help Lost Pets Get Home Faster

by Carrie Boyko, CEB
Just today I saw another heartbreaking sign on a neighborhood tree. You know the one--"Lost Dog". Sadly, 6 to 8 million lost pets end up in shelters each year. Only 12% of dogs return home, and even fewer cats. Half of those that are not recovered from shelters are euthanized.

Look Boys--Oliver's New ScruffTag
When micro-chipping became available we all jumped on that bandwagon, thinking "Here's a tag that Fido can't lose". The problem is the technology is not standardized, so many scanners don't work on every chip.

Now, with QR codes PetHub is able to help get pets home faster. With the purchase of any tag or collar from PetHub, owners have access to an online site for their pet's information. If Fido or Fifi is lost, any scanner on a smart phone or computer can be used to read the information an owner makes available on Fido's page: contact info, Fido's medication requirements, health issues, social needs, etc. Also free with a tag or collar are directories of providers, parks, and events, along with several hundred articles on various pet care topics.

Oliver's Fluff Hides His Collar

For a small annual fee, your entire household of pets can add additional services. For instance, a Silver level membership provides help getting the word out about a lost pet.  Visit your PetHub account to flag Fifi as lost and notices will go out to all local shelters. The system also assists you with printing flyers to pass out yourself.

In addition to all this help, if your pet's tag is scanned by anyone, you'll automatically receive an email notification. Included with that notification will be a GPS map showing you where Fifi is located. Isn't that amazing?!

Always Happy:
Playtime in His New Collar

And there's more! Gold level members get access to all these features plus pet loss insurance coverage for up to $3000 in veterinary bills. And here's what surprised me most. You can add additional pets to this coverage for $5 a year. They don't have to have a PetHub collar. If they live with you, they qualify for this coverage.

If that's not enough, PetHub wants their Gold level members to look sportin' also. Once a year they get a brand new, limited edition PetHub tag to clean up their look. If you have an active dog like my Tanner, you know that their tags get pretty scuffed up in a short time. I guess PetHub realizes this and decided to keep their clients looking good.

Our fave is the scrufftag collar which has the tag attached directly on the collar. What's so good about that? My little Oliver has a fluffy white mane of neck fur that stains easily from dangling metal tags. When I discovered the scrufftags I knew this was the solution for Oliver. Watch for our giveaway of scrufftags tomorrow at Fido's Freebie Friday. We love this collar and its great features offered by PetHub!

ASK THE VET: Traveling with Your Pet

Dear Dr. Jacki:

I have a question about strategies for traveling with dogs-- ways to soothe and calm a nervous dog, etc. Could you address this with an eye toward both auto and air travel--long trips in mind.

Thanks, S.J.

Dear SJ:

Traveling in the Car

Make sure your pet always has a form of identification on them.  Preferably their collar with id tag and a microchip which can be implanted by your veterinarian.  I cannot tell you the number of stories that I have heard of pets finding themselves in unfamiliar surroundings and escaping, not to be found again.

Pets should travel in either a crate or a carrier that is big enough for them to stand, sit, lie down and turn around safely.  It is a good idea to get your pet used to the crate before the trip.  Have your pet spend a small amount of time in the crate daily adding more and more time each day.

Don’t feed your pet within 3 hours of travel.  Some pets have a tendency for nausea while in the car and they may vomit.

It is never a good idea to leave a pet alone in a parked car as vehicles can quickly overheat.

If you are concerned about your pet’s nervousness while traveling, make an appointment with your veterinarian to discuss medications that can be given to your pet to make the car ride a little more enjoyable.

Set aside time during your travel day to take your pet on a walk.  Exercising your pet before the trip begins will make them a better travel partner as well.

Travel by Air

Most importantly, make an appointment with your veterinarian before your travel date.  Your pet will need an exam and a health certificate stating that he is healthy enough to travel.  Your veterinarian will give you all of the necessary papers.  The health certificate must be dated within 10 days of travel.

Make sure your pet and your pet’s crate are properly identified with their name and address.  Some pets have escaped at airports so please leave their collar on while traveling.

Choose a crate or carrier that is big enough for him to stand, sit, lie down and turn around safely inside.

Discuss tranquilizers with your veterinarian.  I am not a fan of tranquilizers during air travel because it can be difficult to tell if the pet is truly relaxed or sick and in need of medical care.  There are some ‘natural’ tranquilizers that have been used with success like Bach Flower Rescue Remedy, which you can order through this site, by clicking on the picture/link below.  Check with your veterinarian before using these as well.

Have safe and happy travels!!

Dr. Jacki
