Mutt Monday Remembers Our Pets

by Carrie Boyko, CEB
© AllThingsDogBlog.com
Xena, Warrior-Princess
Pet people all know about the Rainbow Bridge. If you search the Internet you'll find dozens of images of this playground of pets that have passed to what we may call animal Heaven. I like to think that this is a place where our pets' needs are all met and they are once again young and healthy, able to be as active and energetic as they once were as pups or kittens.

In honor of our lost Xena, I began the Rainbow Bridge Memorial page here on All Things Dog Blog sometime ago. You can enjoy a video to soft music while you browse the pets and their stories. Some have verses or stories, others just dates. Each owner has chosen their own words to share, and some could not find their words. It's okay.

If you would like to memorialize your lost pet here, please send a clear photo along with any words or sentiments you'd like to include to AllThingsDogBlog@gmail.com. Place RAINBOW BRIDGE MEMORIAL in the subject line and I'll let you know when you pet can be viewed.

Today's post is an opportunity for other bloggers to join in with memories of their own pets or others they have written about. Rainbow Bridge episodes are welcome, as are eulogies or obituaries that share the love of an owner for a lost pet.

Grab your tissues before you read. These will be tears of joy; keep that in mind as you remember your own lost pets and their stories. And please click the Tweet below to bring others here to join us:
Next week's theme for Mutt Monday's posts will be something new and different again. I'm inviting bloggers to share a special feature of their own blogs. Share whatever single event or theme that your blog focuses on, educating our readers on your specialty. This is a great chance to
Introduce yourself to my readers
If you write in your pet's voice, feel free to introduce your pet for him or her. Take it!

The Year of the Rabbit

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

We'll Miss You Robby
Today I learned that this year is the Chinese Year of the Rabbit. For our family, it started that way. Our first annual Easter Rabbit Adoptathon was moderately successful and a ton of fun. We tried to educate our readers about the joys and the considerations of rabbits as pets, after which we offered an adoptathon to help homeless bunnies find furever families.

Unfortunately, Robby, our family's rabbit, only lived to see the beginning of this event that was planned in his honor. As the day of the Adoptathon went on, he became lethargic and stopped eating. The rest, as they say, is history.

Robby lived a full 9 years, a good life for a rabbit who has always had a loving home. He came into the world as the adoptee of my son, a college student at the time. Marc enjoyed having a quiet roommate that did not have nightly drunken brawls like many college roommates. They shared a small, but adequate space together, until the new school year placed Marc with a roommate that preferred an animal-free environment. Imagine that!

Robby came to live in our home in 2003. We successfully taught Xena that Robby was off-limits for playing, feeling that she was too large and heavy to play safely. Ever the mother, though, she still attempted to wash his ears and watch after him. It was no surprise to me, as she had done the same with our cat, Patches, when we adopted her in 1998.

With many opportunities, we thought perhaps Patches and Robby might hit it off, but alas, Robby continued his aloof attitude toward this much-too-playful, like-sized housemate. Patches was curious, but not enough to encourage play or even camaraderie. The two simply watched one another from a safe distance, sharing only a modest interest in the other's activities.

When Tanner joined our family in 2006, Robby was a well-established member of the family, and Tanner thought he seemed fair game as a playmate. And I have to give it to Tanner, he made every effort to befriend Robby, learning to get down and play at Robby's level. He learned to be quiet, still and gentle, but never did have the satisfaction of a good romp with Robby. It just was not meant to be. Robby was far too smart to allow it.

If Tanner was not enough of a nuisance, Robby's resolve was really put to the test when Oliver was adopted by my daughter in 2007.  Much smaller than Robby when he arrived, Robby finally found himself with a diminutive packmate-wannabe, but nevertheless a much too rambunctious one. Oliver never quite grasped the concept of "The bunny doesn't want to play". He was certain that he could eventually convince Robby to be his bunny-buddy.

Robby remained with us until Marc finished graduate school in 2009 and moved into an apartment of his own. No one could tell him whom he could live with any longer; he paid the bills and chose the roommates. It was at that time that he requested HIS bunny back. Who were we to refuse him?

Robby was a good traveler, venturing north to Virginia in the back of our car, to settle in with his original roommate in a new home. This home turned out to be the perfect place for two young men--plenty of space to hop around exploring, without Xena, Tanner, little Oliver or curious Patches poking around.

Robby and Marc--BFF
Robby lived out the remainder of his 9 years getting daily ear rubs and forming an extremely strong bond with his roommate--something my furry family could not successfully accomplish. Cheers to Marc for making that happen. And to Robby, we hope you and Xena will finally come to terms at the Rainbow Bridge, where we're certain there will be a 24-hour salad bar to suit Robby's insatiable appetite for veggies.

Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day?
It's International Treat Loving Day!

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

Rainbow Bridge Dog Houses
A Special Tribute to Xena

Who knew? A special day for dog treat appreciation? I had to laugh in spite of myself, the dog treat baking, recipe-seeking maniac that I have lately become. Maybe it's because I'm an empty nester now. No kids to bake for, so I'm coming up with Fido yummies instead.

Today's picture is in honor of our fallen pack mate, Xena. We lost her to a stroke in October, but she continues to live in our hearts, memories, and at our Rainbow Bridge Memorial. I still return to her eulogy here on the blog to remember those feelings she brought out so strongly in me.

Dear Xena: The dog houses are for you at the Rainbow Bridge, sweet girl. We know you will share with your new friends. We hope you are enjoying the company that we have tried to bring you with the many friends in our Rainbow Bridge Memorial. We'll keep inviting our readers to submit their lost furry friends' photos to be with you. Love, Mom

Would you like to make the treats I've displayed in this photo? They're easy to prepare and very healthy for your fido. More importantly, Tanner and Oliver completely approve. Check out their comments at 5 Minutes for Fido. You'll find the recipe here at Paris Permenter's guest post. Happy tails!

Pet Blogger Introductions:
"Nice to Meet You"

by Carrie Boyko, CEB
© A. Boyko
Xena, Carrie, Tanner and Oliver

Jack and A.J. over at Pup Love invited us to join another blog hop this weekend, designed to introduce ourselves. I see their point. When you enter the world of blogging, and everyone already seems to know one another, you can sometimes feel a bit lost. It's sort of like transferring to a new middle school and trying to figure out where to sit at lunch. Everyone seems to have friends and is already having fun. What a great idea to help us all get acquainted without playing that peer pressure game. Below is a quick shot at my hello. Feel free to leave questions in the comments, and I'll spill. No lack of words here!

Names: Tanner, the Golden Retriever, and Oliver, a Papillon. Xena left us for the Rainbow Bridge in October. You can read about her at her eulogy, and I've linked to one post for Tanner and Oliver that will help you get acquainted.
Humans: Carrie
Blog: Carrie writes All Things Dog Blog. Tanner and Oliver offer commentary and general silliness at 5 Minutes for Fido.
Age: Tanner is 4 1/2 and Oliver is nearly 3 1/2.
Location: Near Orlando (in hot, sunny, humid Florida)
Breeds: Tanner is a Golden Retriever that was a non-standard pup. His breeder practically gave him to us for a food/medical donation. He's far too tall, has an unusually short coat for a Golden, and a knobby occipital lobe, but I love him all the same. I still find it hard to believe anyone could not have loved this goofy, affectionate, loyal dog.
Oliver is a Papillon with an interesting adoption story. You can read it at the link above in the Name category. You'll probably enjoy the antics of my daughter--his savior.
Best trick: Oliver performs "Go Nite Nite", which translates to "crate" at the speed of light. He also has an adorable pirouette at dinnertime, just to show his excitement. It's an endearing behavior that everyone seems to enjoy witnessing.
The answer to Tanner's best trick is a toss up. He's an excellent Houdini, managing to unlatch crates, unlock gates, open our front door and even unlatch a child-guard-protected baby gate that humans cannot figure out. He's probably pretty proud of his Houdini skills, but he also takes mealtime very seriously and will sit and wait permission to eat, in a puddle of drool if necessary, until I give him the go ahead. Then there's Fetch. He's an ace at Fetch, Drop It, Leave It, and swimming is his favorite activity. We have spell that word around him. He's one busy guy.
Favorite toy: No good answers here. Tanner loves ALL toys, even Oliver's little 'baby' toys. He enjoys everything he has permission to play with--thankfully not hubby's hats or shoes.
Oliver is another story, but lately he likes the toys that you insert an empty plastic water bottle inside. He loves their crinkly sound, and these toys are light weight enough for him to pick up and drag around. At 9 lbs., he can't play with Tanners 'big boy' toys.
Best Friend: Oliver is true to his companion dog heritage. He's bonded to me and hubby and spends most of his time keeping us company, pretty much no matter what we're doing. When he's not with us, he's usually chewing on Tanner's ears, an activity that Tanner seems to think is more of an ear massage--he loves it!
Tanner, on the other hand, is the epitome of an extrovert. He knows how to work a party and demonstrates those skills at the dog park quite enthusiastically each week, stopping to sniff and visit with everyone. Some even get personal kisses. Best friends? I can't even guess.
Worst Enemy: Tough question. I suppose Oliver is not fond of a thunder storm. He tends to lie down close by and not leave my side. No behavioral issues--he just wants to be near me when the rumbles get going.
Tanner's only enemy is a barrier. He doesn't like to be held back from a social opportunity. If he's off leash--such as at the dog park or in my yard--he'll behave admirably and friendly. He'll heel and walk with me like a perfect angel. Put him on a leash for a walk and sometimes he'll decide he absolutely must visit that friend that is two blocks down. At 70 lbs., I have to put on my imaginary Pack Leader hat and really play boss when I walk him. Thank goodness for good training as a puppy, or he'd be dragging me around like those poor owners on the Dog Whisperer.
Proudest Moment: Tanner is the most proud each time he bolts through the gate at the dog park, making his victory lap, as if to say "I'm here. Let the party begin!"
Oliver now has 2 proudest moments and I can't possibly leave either out. Earning his CGC (Canine Good Citizen) was a big deal for him. Sit and Down always seemed to mean the same thing, so we found ourselves struggling with the simplest of concepts to overcome.
Recently Oliver was accepted into Dogs for the PAWS, and his portrait was painted as a part of this project to build awareness for rescue dogs. We're totally smitten with Miss Anna Marie's fab art. He's so proud; he's bursting. (Me too!) Now he's officially part of the Paws Pack 80; what's not to be proud of about that!
All Things Dog Blog's Niche: Here's one more tweak. If I'm introducing my blog, I might as well offer up some kibble on what we're all about. All Things Dog Blog is primarily a resource that provides solutions for living with dogs. Thus our tagline: Strategies for Happy Dogs and Happy Families. In addition to my problem-solving articles, I offer an Ask the Vet column, penned by holistic veterinarian, Dr. Pat Bradley, and an Ask the Dog Trainer column, where your questions are fielded by a team of training professionals.
Of course, we have to lighten things up a bit occasionally by tossing in a humorous video, a comic relief article, and inviting our readers to submit their stories for RESCUING ROVER  (archives here) and Pup Profiles.
We also offer a Rainbow Bridge Memorial to our readers who wish to have a serene place to remember their fallen pups. With beautiful music playing along with a nice video, you can visit the pups that have joined your loved one, adding their photos, poems, comments and such to our place to remember them by. My Xena is there now also.
Got questions? We've got answers. You can reach us at LetsAdoptaDogPark@gmail.com. Find us on Facebook and Twitter too. Hope to hear from you soon. Happy tails!

Duke and His Football

Duke's photo above, submitted to this Super Dog Sunday event, will certainly live on as a special picture for one very loyal reader. Anita has been a staunch supporter of my site for quite sometime, and just yesterday she lost her best friend Duke. Feel free to leave your kind words or support for Anita here as comments. I'm sure she'll be checking in to see her baby. Thank you all for caring.

Duke will have a warm spot in the All Things Dog Blog Rainbow Bridge Memorial, where he will be close to his packmate, Allie Woo-Woo.

All Things Dog Blog Introduces
Our Rainbow Bridge Memorial

by Carrie Boyko
(C.M) reader copyright on file
Inspired by Early Grayce Young
After a particularly sad day, Dr. Pat and I had a pow wow. We lost our first patient...well, sort of. When a reader loses a dog, we feel the pain, as well. What could we do to help our readers, who have lost a beloved companion, move toward peace again?

A memorial is our solution. This page, linked in the sidebar by Early Grayce's photo, will take you to our version of the Rainbow Bridge. You'll find a video with the story, set to beautiful, soothing music. At the end, an inspiring image embodies the idea of the Rainbow Bridge.

Here you will find the photos of All Things Dog Blog's readers' dog photos--the lost ones that they miss, loved and would like to remember always. This is the place where they can count on always visiting their loved one.

Knowing that many of us like to offer an inspirational gift to a friend, when their pet passes on, I have included a link to Dr. Pat's book, More Than a Pet, offering help for future preparations, along with All Thing Dog Blog's Rainbow Bridge Resource Roundup, which is a collection of books for folks of all ages. From workbooks for children to  poems and stories for adults who have lost their companion, to novels about wonderful best friends, you'll find a wide variety of books to choose from. I invite you to visit our Rainbow Bridge Resource Roundup for yourself, or for a friend or loved one in need of inspiration.

Instructions for submitting your own fallen angels can be found in the sidebar of this page, or on the Rainbow Bridge Memorial page, as well as at the bottom of this post. You will be able to visit your best friend as often as you like.

Dedicated to Early Grayce

Dedicated to Early Grayce Young, our first fallen pup, you'll find the photo just above this line in both the sidebar and on the memorial page. Another pup shares the dedication of the page; Allie Woo Woo is the first dog to be shared on our RESCUING ROVER column that has left her owner. She and Early share top honors on the memorial page, for helping Dr. Pat and I plan and execute this way to share your joyous moments with the rest of us.

Dedicated to Allie Woo Woo

We look forward to receiving your pup's photo. You may send it to LetsAdoptaDogPark@gmail.com, with a note in the subject line: Rainbow Bridge. Include your best friend's name, and his age or years on this Earth. If you like, feel free to include an additional sentiment of your own, a quote or saying, your dog's philosophy for living, or perhaps a short poem or verse. We'll do our best to include your brief addition to your pet's memorial on the Rainbow Bridge Memorial at All Things Dog Blog. The page has only just begun to populate. Visit often if you wish to see others' lost pets. I like to think of them playing in the warm sunshine, just as the story explains. Happy tails to all our readers, and thank you for continuing to inspire us to add more to All Things Dog Blog. Happy tails!
