Prepare Fido for Evacuation

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

Not Leaving Without Blue Dog!
National Preparedness Month ends Monday, September 30. Please review these tips to make sure you have done the minimum to prepare your pets for an evacuation during an emergency. We also recommend you read up on pet first aid and be sure your first aid kit is complete. Check here for more on this topic.

  • Keep your pet 1st aid items together to assure your emergency kit is always ready when needed. Change out food for freshness regularly.
  • Plan for worst-case scenario. Pack food and water for a week.
  • Prepare for potty emergencies with pee pads, trash bags, poop bags and umbrella.
  • Tag and microchip all pets in case you are separated.
  • Don’t forget vet and emergency vet phone numbers, rabies ID tag, license, and put cell number on tags.
  • Pack extra water for flushing in case pet is exposed to unsafe flood waters or chemicals.
  • Check pet-friendly shelters and keep a list of pet-friendly hotels that are out of harm’s way.
  • Familiarize a friend/neighbor/relative to care for your pets in a sudden absence. You may not be able to get home to them in a disaster.
  • If you evacuate, do so early. Natural disasters are frightening to pets. Minimize stress by leaving early.
  • Leave radio, flashlights and extra batteries with emergency kit at all times.
Keep in mind, too, that an evacuation is a time when you and Fido can support one another, bond and become closer. Remain confident and keep your cool to give him the best chance at getting through it with less anxiety.

#Pet1stAid Winners and Thank Yous

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

Last night's #Pet1stAid winners will be prepared for an emergency evacuation, at least when it comes to the basics of a first aid kit. It's a good start. With all the great tips that were shared last evening, we hope that everyone is busy building a proper kit for taking care of their pets in case of an injury or an evacuation. The message of last night's party was definitely "Be prepared"!

In addition to winning Dr. Emmo's first aid solutions, our winners also took away other first aid and evacuation kit essentials. Dr. Emmo's products pictured above will be accompanied by items from their prize partners: Gamma2, Healer's Pet Care and Petlinks Systems. You can learn more about these items at yesterday's pre-party post.

Thanks also to our guest expert @ArdenKnowsPets, for joining us to share tips and answer your questions. We all enjoyed her expert advice and are looking forward to working with her again at our next event.

By the way, thanks to all of you who attended and participated last evening. Despite the
challenges of 2 other pet space parties and a presidential TV address, #Pet1stAid was a trending topic! That's truly a testament to your values: pet first aid matters!

Congratulations to our #Pet1stAid winners:
RSVP-@Charliethruhike, PreTweet-@ncazterri, Raffle-@GavinCarroll, 4-@Veetadog, 5-@Freckles_Goose, 6-BuddyReviews, 7-@OhSlowDown, 8-@Zoya513, 9-@FreebiesforFido, Grand Prize #10-@MissStellyBean.

We appreciate your joining us to learn about National Preparedness Month and how Dr. Emmo's is contributing. You can still take advantage of the FREE travel kit of their wound wash and wound gel by visiting this link while supplies last. In addition, Dr. Emmo's is offering a 30% discount to party guests using the code "pet1staid". This offer is valid through the end of September.

We look forward to seeing you at our next event sponsored by @Coupaw, #Coupaween, when we'll be sharing Halloween safety tips and giving away costumes, accessories and other holiday items from Coupaw. This event is scheduled for October 1. See you soon!

Learn #Pet1stAid & Win

by Carrie Boyko, CEB
So you've decided you'd like to learn more about pet first aid. You'd like to ask Arden Moore some questions and hear her tips for caring for your pet when sick or injured. That's the primary reason you'll come to the #Pet1stAid Twitter Party, but there's even more.

Arden is an animal behavior consultant, master certified pet first aid instructor, author of 24 pet books, and host of the Oh Behave Show on PetLifeRadio.com. She shares her home with 2 dogs and 2 cats and shares more on Four Legged Life.

Arden and the Event Barkers team will be dishing all sorts of first aid and preparedness tips to help you ready your pets for any type of disaster. We hope you'll have questions too! Arden will answer some during the party and those that are more complicated will be handled on the Dr. Emmo's Facebook page soon thereafter.

While you're busy hobnobbing with other Tweeps and reading @ArdenKnowsPets' helpful info, you'll also be eligible to win great prize packages during #Pet1stAid. All that you see above will be given away in the party in multiples, plus a $100 gift card that you can spend however you'd like. Let's review the prizes.

Dr. Emmo's first aid solutions are sponsoring this event and will be included in each of the prize packages. Learn more about their products at additional articles here and on DogTipper.com and CatTipper.com. In addition, winners can receive other products pictured above that are perfect for first aid and evacuation kits:

The Gamma2 Travel-tainer you see above is an airtight food container with 2 large bowls attached--perfect for weekenders for a few days of evacuation. Read more at this link.

Your pets' wounds may need bandaging like the Shepherd in the image above, and that's where Healer's Pet Care comes in. This unique bandage resists slipping, is washable and reusable, and closes with Velcro. Check it out at the link.

Finally, if your pet is anxious during storms or evacuation, he's normal. This is a time of great emotions and worry; they do tend to soak this energy up from us. Give your pet a piece of your clothing with your scent on it, and you'll find that he'll often relax a bit with the comfort of your scent close by. You can do this without worry by placing the clothing inside the Scents of Security toy made by the Petlinks System. Your kitty or pup can snuggle with this in their bed and feel a bit more confident that you're nearby. Check them out on Facebook; they're new members!

In addition to all this, our Grand Prize winner at the end of the evening will grab a $100 "Emergency Fund" gift card to spend anywhere needed. We look forward to seeing you at #Pet1stAid. Be sure to join us early and check in with a hello to your hosts: @AllThingsDog, @DogTipper and @EventBarkers.
