10 More Fresh Pet Food Tips

I promised to share more of the fresh food tips from our recent Event Barkers #Gamma2Fresh Twitter Party. Here they are at long last. Before I launch, let me pass along a tip on where you can pick up the TRAVEL-tainer in the image above. • Even the best, most-expensive pet food is a health hazard when infested with bugs. Choose airtight #Vittles Vault storage for complete pest resistance.
• Only purchase enough food for up to 6 weeks of use to assure freshness
• “Use By” or “Best Used by” dates apply ONLY to sealed bags.
• Artificial preservatives give food a longer shelf life but often include harmful chemicals that outweigh the benefits. Choose natural preservatives like Tocopherols (various forms of vitamin E) and Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C).
• Fats and oils in pet food are extremely susceptible to oxidation, caused by regular access to oxygen. We recommend an airtight container to limit this problem.
• Oxidation reduces nutritional value of food and causes the taste to be less appealing.
• Mold is highly toxic to dogs. If your pup eats moldy food, get him to a vet pronto for treatment.
• When purchasing pet food, check bags carefully for tears and splits. Do not buy a bag that has been torn and is retaped. Pests, mold, and moisture may have set in that will make your pet sick.
• Don’t forget to completely tighten screw on lids to totally seal out air and pests.
• Discard food with changes in color, consistency, or odor. Thoroughly wash and dry the container before refilling. 

Following these 10 tips plus the 10 included in our earlier post will help you keep your pet food fresh and pest-free. I hope you had the good fortune to join us for the recent #Gamma2Fresh Twitter Party. We enjoyed some silly Gamma2 G-Men video questions and generally had a great time. But we also got serious about keeping our pet food fresh. Here are some of the tips we shared in the party that many said were new information or just plain helpful. I hope you find a gem in here too!

1. Save money on dog food by keeping it in an airtight pet food container like a Gamma2 VittlesVault to prevent spoilage and pest access. No bugs means healthier pets.
2. Before you purchase pet food, check to make sure you've selected the product you intended, and always check the Expiration Date. No date=no purchase!
3. Store pet food inside your home. Pests can find their way into a garage and eat right thru an unopened bag of pet food.
4. Only use food grade, BPA-Free plastic containers, as dyes and BPA can leach into food.
5. ALWAYS wash your pet food container in between refills to remove oils that may become rancid. These fats will contaminate new food placed in the container, potentially making your pet sick.
6. Rancid oils increases the risk of mites, mold, and bacteria, all of which may lead to food poisoning, vomiting or diarrhea. Cool, dry storage and an airtight container are your only tools to avoid these problems.
7. Greener Earth Tip: Wash your pet food container with hot water and biodegradable dish soap for a healthier Earth.
8. When you empty a new bag into your pet food container, ALWAYS save the product label with the name, bar code, batch code, production code, and Best by date, in case of recall.
9. Always store food in a cool, dry location indoors, under 80 degrees F.
10. Households with multiple pets on different foods may buy food in small bags and store all with bags inside 1 large pet food container.

Mutt Monday Excited to Celebrate #Gamma2Fresh Twitter Party Winners

Sunday night's #Gamma2Fresh Twitter Party was short and oh so sweet. Fourteen lucky winners went away with new pet food containers from Gamma2. These Vittles Vaults included their TRAVEL-tainer with attached bowls, a Vittles Vault Jr. and one Grand Prize winner received a winners' choice of container from the Vittles Vault line, along with a TRAVEL-tainer for on-the-go noshing.

While doling out tips for keeping pet food fresh, we also did a lot of sharing of the Gamma2 G-Men video and had a silly G-Men Q and A session. Have you seen the video? What fun! They put on a Blue Man Group style show, using the Vittles Vault containers as drums.
