Flush Puppies Earth Day Giveaway

Flushable Doodie Bags

Flush Puppies are back and we couldn't be more thrilled. I bumped into the founding brothers at Global Pet Expo and they were happy to provide some additional giveaways. Yay! Perfect timing with Earth Day just around the corner.

You may be wondering how doggie poop bags can be "Green". With Flush Puppies, it's easy. These bags are flushable in municipal sewer systems, and completely biodegrade within a couple of days. Simply drop the bag of waste into a toilet and flush. One important tip: Don't tie a knot in the bag. This holds air inside the bag, and when water pressure is low, the bag may not flush well. With many toilets being made with lower water pressure to conserve on this important resource, we need to remember this important rule.

What else do we love about Flush Puppies? No more smelly trash cans! That's huge. With my mom now living nearby, she has recently switched to Flush Puppies when she learned that she cannot dispose of Jacque's 'jobs' in the community trash receptacle. That left her with a not-so-uncommon problem. Fortunately I had the solution for her and now Flush Puppies has a new customer--Jacque!

So, if you'd like to give Flush Puppies a try, you can enter below to win a 3-pack of bags. There are 20 bags in a package, so this should be an ample one-month supply for most dogs. I'm offering lots of ways to enter, so choose your faves and jump right in. Pat yourself on the back for making an effort to live a little lighter on planet Earth.

Our giveaway will take entries through midnight on Thursday April 18. Winners will be announced on Friday, April 19. Good luck to you all!

Prefer the sure-thing method? No problem. You can simply order your Flush Puppies online. Their website also includes a store locator at this link which may help you find a brick and mortar store near you. Flush Puppies thanks you!

Happy Earth Day!

Oliver the Tree Hugger
Today is a day when many of us join the masses to honor mother Earth with more sustainable living practices. You can do this in your own way, from participating in a local celebration to adding a new act of preservation to your daily routine. Try one of these on for size and see if it doesn't feel good to do your part:

  • Start composting your kitchen and household wastes, rather than sending them to the landfill where the micro-organisms in the ground cannot assist with their breakdown.
  • Purchase biodegradable, no-phosphate home cleaning solutions that don't pollute with their runoff.
  • Choose natural ways to fight pests in your home, yard and on your pets. Some solutions include peppermint oil spray, clove oil, DE powder, Borax and more. Be sure to read up on their proper use :)
  • Skip the plastic, whether it be water bottles or bags. Choose re-usables to reduce landfill overuse and unnecessary recycling.
  • Plant a tree in a place where its shade will help cool your home in the summer heat.
  • Use styrofoam packaging materials as extra insulation in your attic.
  • Clean up your dog's waste promptly with a flushable poop bag, and allow our sewer system to do what it was intended for. Try Flush Puppies!
These and many more small changes can get you started in a lifestyle that will promise a better future for your grandchildren and our Earth. If we each add one new habit, imagine the synergies of change....Happy Earth Day!

A Greenie Giveaway
Just in Time for Earth Day

Teenie Greenies
for the Green Litte Dog at Your House
Oh, dear....Pet Dental Health Month was was way back in February. Now it's Earth Day and you're trying to Go Green? Time for a Greenies intervention...

Many of my readers tell me that brushing their dogs' teeth is simply not an option. I can write about it, encourage it and even show off pearly whites to set the example, but I can't make it happen.

That's where Greenies come in, the dental chew that helps to clean your pets' teeth. Most pet owners know that their dogs' oral health is connected to their furry friends' overall, long term health. Greenies can help by doing what the lack of a toothbrush is failing to accomplish: remove or reduce plaque on the teeth. Further, this digestible formula doesn't have the same danger of splintering that many rawhide chews, bones and strips do.

A recent poll show done by Trone, Inc. research showed that 30% of pet owners have recently increased their purchases of dental cleaning treats, in light of this information about long term health. The truth is cookie-type treats do not have the same effectiveness as Greenies, which are accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council to help control tartar and plaque.

So, with periodontal disease proven to be the most common pet health problem, what should you do to prevent it in your pet?
  • Brush
  • Rinse with plaque-reducing rinses
  • Use water additives that reduce plaque retention
  • Choose kibble vs. canned or soft food, for better oral health
  • Serve Greenies chew treat to reduce plaque and tartar. Other brands are available; however, Greenies seems to have taken the forefront in the public eye. They simply have the greatest visibility and the most widely-known name.
I'll add one more tip here: It's a little idea I heard from a groomer friend who owns 3 toy-sized dogs. Those of you who have these diminutive little pups may know how difficult it is to get a toothbrush into their tiny mouths. My friend adds a bit of doggie toothpaste (NEVER use human toothpaste on your dog; it is toxic to them!) to her pups' brushes, and gives it to them for a brief bit of chewing fun. Pretty clever, huh? Just be sure to supervise and remove the brush when your pup gets too rough with it.

I've tried this tactic with Tanner and Oliver. It works fairly well with Oliver, although he doesn't stay with it as long as I would like. Tanner is another story. He has a tendency to get a bit excessive with the toothbrush chewing, and before I know it, he has the bristles all over the floor! We'll stick with brushing his teeth; he's a pretty good boy. Check out this silly smile:

Is This Smile Good Enough?
So, let's give away a few Greenies to get you started. Sound good? Tanner and Oliver don't know it yet, but the Easter Bunny will be bringing them Greenies, along with their homemade cookies. Did you read the recipe on Tuesday? Our super duper Chicken and Carrot Biscuits were a big hit on baking day, but by now I think they've forgotten. They'll be getting some cute rabbit-shaped cookies on Sunday.

Following are YOUR prize possibilities. Be sure to read the rules!
  • One large Fido (50-100 lbs.) will win a treat pak of dental chews containing 8 Greenies.
  • One medium-sized Pup (25-50 lbs.) will win a treat pak of dental chews with 12 Greenies inside.

African Cats: The Next Great Earth Day Adventure

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

Pardon me for not getting this trailer sized properly, but alas, no measures at my disposal seemed to work on this one.  Nevertheless, I hope you will join me in seeing this wonderful film during it's first week, when a donation will be made to help protect the African Savanna. It opens on Friday, April 22--Earth Day. See you there!
