Pet Obesity: Not Just a U.S. Problem

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

I have to admit that with all the U.S. pet food companies racing to create lowfat foods for our tubby Tabbies and fat Fidos, I've been seeing this problem as purely a U.S. cultural issue. We go out to eat and the portions continue to grow, so our pets' portion control seems to be going out of the window.

When I received this infographic from a British non profit it was clear that we're not alone. Pet owners simply can't say no to those adorable faces. Read on for some interesting info and check out your pet for a waistline evaluation:

Yep, you are right - it's not isolated to the US, but the US is leading the way - unfortunately. The stats in both countries are frightening and so easily prevented!

I understand the portion control issue. I look at how much I eat, then look at Maya & Pierson's small portions, and wonder how it is they aren't starving. Maya, a 70lb Labrador, only gets 3 cups a day total! Doesn't that seem like too little? But her weight is perfect - neither too skinny, nor too fat. So, 3 cups a day it is.

@Dawn: I hear ya! After a highly active puppyhood when Tanner was getting 3 Cups of food TWICE a day, he has now settled into a much lesser amount, given his less active lifestyle than that of his youth. I say that with tongue in cheek as he is still young, but no longer a puppy.

I also have adjusted his food to allow for the training treats and rewards he gets for product modeling and testing all manner of toys that arrive here on a regular basis. I don't think he's complaining!

Further, when I look at Oliver's meager portions, Tanner's appear gigantic in comparison. Each dog has its own unique lifestyle and calorie requirements.
