by Carrie Boyko, CEB

Are you seeing double? Nope! Tanner was in the last post with a batch of toys to give away, and here he is still posing. He has a rock-solid stay. I think he acutally likes getting his picture taken!

Weekly Wag ButtonThis prize includes a Toki Poki hat and a flying disc from Izea, which will both go to one winner. With the sun out of your eyes and a disc to throw, you and Fido can have some fun and both get some exercise. Watch for a Weekly Wag on disc dogs coming soon to my Saturday series. Have you signed up to win prizes by commenting on your own experiences with the Weekly Wag? If not, visit the announcement post here. This giveaway will be open through midnight February 9, and the winner will be announced on Friday, February 10, 2012. Good luck!

Full disclaimer: The items in this giveaway are conference swag (free samples). There is no purchase required to enter and US and Canadian entries will be accepted, with the exception of Quebec, where this giveaway is forbidden. I have not been compensated to give theseitems away.

Doog Walkie Belt Holds it All!

Hands Free Dog Walking Gets Organized

Completely Prepared
with the Doog Walkie Belt
Have you seen me at the dog park lately? Or maybe on a walk with Tanner and Oliver? I have new gear for keeping everything I need ready to go when dog activities call. Dude! It's called the Doog. I like to think of this handy clip on, hold-everything-belt as the "out-of-date fanny pack meets stylish dog park visitor". Okay, so maybe dog park parents are not that stylish. Call us athletic or active and that probably works better. The Doog fits right in with both.

I'll admit when I first put it on, it felt a little bulky, but one round at the dog park and I was sold. I laminated a copy of my drivers license and now I no longer have to scramble for necessities when I leave with the dogs. With my Doog belt, my keys and the dogs' leashes ready to go, I tuck my phone easily in the loop provided and off I go.

The treat pouch is easy to access for dog sports enthusiasts or trainers. There is also a place for wipes, poop bags and a carabiner hook for extra leashes or toys you may need. And I'm loving having my phone right where I need it.

Not Too Bulky
Under a Shirt Either
The Doog is completely adjustable, one size fits all. But colors? They've got a great assortment including black, red, camo, denim (OMG, my fave!), pink (for the girls!) , lemon yellow, sage green, Aqua and yellow combo, and a brown and pink polka dot fashion version. There seems to be a design for everyone, even Cesar Millan.

Cesar Millan helped design his own product and had the folks at Doog create one just for him. It's available to the you to purchase as a bit of an upsized version of what I've got to show you here. It's rougher and tougher; it's cool with it's tennis ball holder, 2 caribiners for hooking dog leashes to you and an extra large treat pouch. But it's not red! The Cesar Millan Pro Belt comes only in gun metal grey. That must be the macho color, huh?!

Catch Ya Later
Designed to free up your hands so you can enjoy active fun with your dog, the Doog was given the Editor's Choice award from Modern Dog Magazine. I'll second that. I qualify as an editor, right?

Doog (Dog Owner's Outdoor Gear) is an Australian company that makes gear for active owners and their dogs to enjoy outdoor activity even more. Their products are now available in the U.S., Europe and Asia. You can check out store locations here, or buy one from their website here or at their US site here. Want to check them out a bit more? I have two red Doog belts with khaki trim just waiting for active owners to pack up their gear and hit the road with Fido. Would you like to be a Doog dude or a Doog dudette?! After you check out this demo video, be sure to enter our giveaway below. Salvaging Your Pet Sitter Experience
with Clear Instructions: A Giveaway

by Carrie Boyko, CEB

© courtesy PlanetDog.com
I've heard the same chorus from many a dog owner: "I can't afford to board or have a sitter while on vacation." I suppose neighbors, family or friends may be willing to trade off for these occasions, but making these sorts of deals is sometimes awkward. The flip side is the ease of dialing a professional who will cost you a pretty penny for her time. Keep in mind, though; you often get what you pay for. You can read more of the pros and cons of pet sitters versus dog walkers in my post this weekend at the Saturday Pet Blogger Hop. Don't miss it!

During the years when I had teenagers at home, there was an unending list of kids' friends who were always willing to drop by and walk the dogs and feed all the pets for a small fee. Those were easier times, and often cheaper than many other options.

The one challenge was getting all the instructions straight, especially when dealing with a kid. No offense meant to any teens that may read this, but sometimes the obvious is not terribly obvious. Enter Planet Dog's Pet Sitting Instructions pad. I just discovered them and had a flashback to all those hand-written instructions that may or may not have worked.

Of course, my coverage of all the details for multiple pets was always perfect , but just when you think you've covered it all, well, that's when there's a surprise.

This great little pad of instructions is like an insurance policy. For a small fee to purchase one you'll always know that your list will be complete. After all, the details are all there; you simply have to fill in the blanks with phone numbers, names, food amounts, times, etc. You can purchase one at the link above in this paragraph, or find a retailer near you at this link. Or if you're feeling lucky, you can try to win one in our giveaway below.

I was impressed that they included not only a vet #, but also an emergency vet #. Nights and weekends your pet sitter may not find your regular vet open, so this is important info to include. I might remind you that you should contact your vet(s) before you leave your pets in the care of others, simply to notify them of who will taking your place. You know--just in case.

The folks at Planet Dog also clearly know their pets' picky little preferences. There's a place on the form for what Fido or Fluffy do like, as well as what they don't like. That was a very smart addition, as many pets have one secret pet peeve that will set them off. It's good to know what that is.

I got a good chuckle when I got to the part about the special rules for what the sitter should and should not do. I found myself filling in the blank for previous pets and situations and laughing. Boy! Would this have been helpful during those teenage pet setting years. it's too late now, but it's never to late to give some pads away, right?

    Living with the Rescues:
    One Dog Lover's Dream Life

    by Kristine Tonks, guest contributor
    © courtesy LivingwiththeRescues.com
When I think of my dream lifestyle, I picture myself surrounded by dogs of all sizes in a large country home with plenty of space to roll around in. While for me this setting remains in the realm of fantasy, for Sharon Langford, author of Living with the Rescues, it is perfect reality.

Despite old clichés about books and covers, I think it is perfectly reasonable to judge this book by outward appearances. The photo on the front shows a very happy woman sitting in the middle of a group of equally happy-looking dogs. Eight very-happy looking dogs, to be exact, and it is hard to believe these animals ever experienced moments of fear or pain.

Sharon Langford decided to write a book about her large family of rescue dogs in order to raise money for the animal welfare organization she created, called Daisy’s Legacy. Throughout the book she illustrates the unique stories of each dog currently sharing her home, as well as the stories of the dogs with whom she was lucky to live in the past. Every single dog was rescued from a shelter or equally unfortunate situation. While some of the details broke my heart, knowing the dogs’ futures are now full of hope prevented me from feeling sad too long.

I admit to being jealous of her ability to welcome them all in to her home. One day I hope to be able to do half as much for animals in my community.

One of my favourite parts was Langford’s description of her country property. The home was designed with every dog’s needs in mind. There is a sound-proof room in the basement for anxious Hannah, she built canine condos in the garage for distrustful Barney, and painted lovely dog-related quotes on the walls of the special dog play room. It truly is a house of my dreams.

In between stories, Langford also included great tips on training and rescuing dogs. She has a lot of history working with shelters and provides some great advice for newly-formed rescue organizations. I have never read a book by a woman more determined to make sure every dog finds a permanent home.

Langford’s beautiful and fascinating rescue dogs have permanently altered the course of her life. I get the feeling she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Living with the Rescues is not a long book. An easy companion for a lazy afternoon, it is full of photos and inspirational descriptions of how each dog has taught the author something new. I found it impossible not to smile all the way to the end.

Kristine Tonks is a former history student who has recently discovered a passion for all things dog; she writes Rescued Insanity. If she hadn't adopted her dog, Shiva, from the shelter when she did, the piles of books would have taken over her house. Kristine feels that rescuing Shiva is by far the best thing she has ever done. Kristine also reviewed A Small Furry Prayer Dog Rescue and the Meaning of Life here on All Things Dog Blog, among others. You can use the Lijit search widget in the sidebar to find her other great book reviews.
